A positive path for spiritual living

An October Message from Jen!

Happy Fall! I am excited to take on the role of Youth/Family director for UCCL. I have been attending Unity church for 18 years now and before accepting the Youth/Family director role had been teaching Sunday School for five years (three at UCCL). I am in my 19th of teaching high school and currently teach online as my full-time job. I have my own two children, Annabelle (7) and August (5), so I know how important it is that our beautiful children are raised with Unity principles and beliefs as their foundation as they grow up. It’s a great gift to see the children’s smiling faces each week and see them grow in spirit. I am so grateful to our families and children for gifting us with their presence.

Sunday School has been transformed into the Lumindorf school for the next 2 ½ months. As of right now, we have completed three weeks of our Diane Venzera Harry Potter Curriculum. This is a 10 week curriculum where we have covered: Are you Muggle or Magic? (magic/spirituality exists within all of us), Platform 9 3/4 (using God to overcoming difficulties in our life), and The Sorting Hat (Learning about how to tune into the Christ Presence). Each week the children explore the wizarding world of Harry Potter through Unity Principles. We do a reading from Harry Potter and do a guided discussion that allows the children to see the trials and tribulations that Harry goes through and apply them to their own life. Next, we complete a creative craft that Jaque Batchelor or Mesha Brightwood (our super creative craft team) designed. So far, the children have chosen and made their magic wands, designed a reflective mirror craft reminding them that they are a reflection God’s light, and painted a sorting hat.

For the remaining weeks in October, we have: Ghosts, Trolls, and Snakes (tuned into your inner guidance and don’t be fooled by outside opinions), The Mirror of Erised (uncovering the desires of your heart and not letting the past hold you back), and He Who Shall Not Be Named (uncovering fear and how to choose love over fear).

The fifth Sunday of every month is Children’s Sunday where the children perform and conduct the message as well as perform the grown-up roles of greeter, usher, etc. This is a great opportunity to emphasize volunteer service and for the congregation to see what the children have been learning inSunday School. There is a role for everyone!  Please speak to your child about participating. Mark your calendar for practices held Sunday, 10/22 12-2 pm (pizza lunch provided), Friday, 10/27 5:30-7 pm (pizza dinner provided) preceding Harry Potter Family Movie Night. Children will need to be at church at 9 am Sunday, 10/29 for a run through before church starts at 10:30 am.

Another upcoming fun family event is Family Movie Night featuring Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone on Friday, 10/27 at 7 pm. Children are encouraged to wear costumes (Harry Potter is encouraged but they should wear what they prefer) and we will have candy, popcorn and treats for the movie. Please join us! The love offering will benefit our Youth and Family program.  We will have a Halloween Party after the Children’s service so please plan to stay for just an hour longer so your child can bond and celebrate a successful Children’s Sunday Service.

If you haven’t filled out an informational form/photo release for your child/children, please see me before or after service. I am starting a parent email list and want to let you know of upcoming lessons and events and need your email on your form so I can keep you in the loop.

Also, we are in need of Sunday School volunteers: both teachers and angels (teacher assistants).  All that is required is a love for Unity and children. Please see me so I can describe what you would be doing, give you the necessary paperwork to fill out and get you started. We have our district Unity Youth/Family director coming on Saturday, 10/21 for a training for anyone who is interested in being a Sunday School teacher or an angel so please see me as soon as you can.

In gratitude and love,

Jen
