Hope From the Flowers: My Experience at the Findhorn Community
Rev. Judith Elia, September 2009
I have never felt such jubilation as I did arriving in Scotland. I was bursting with joy. My heart felt like it was going to explode. I have wanted to visit the Findhorn Gardens since I first heard of them in the early 1980’s. I met one of the co-founders of Findhorn, Peter Caddy when he visited Unity of the Palm Beaches as a Special Guest of our Peace Inspiration Committee. My teacher Golden Eagle Bear (Bob Miller) had been at Findhorn and was friend of Peter’s. We planted a Peace Pole. I remember thinking: if Peter Caddy is blessing this ceremony than Peace as big as the Findhorn vegetables will grow in our hearts today!
The Findhorn Community was begun in 1962 by Peter and Eileen Caddy and Dorothy Maclean. All three had followed disciplined spiritual paths for many years. They were guided to plant a garden in a place that was barren and cold. They listened to the voices within them and acted on the guidance they received through the angelic, devic and etheric realms. They encouraged one another to pray and stretch their spiritual and physical muscles. Findhorn became famous through the Faith, hard work, sacrifice, and daily devotion of these three unique individuals. Each had an essential part to play in the Divine Plan.
They planted seeds, hauled manure, and learned to “love what they were doing, who they were with and the place they were” no matter what happened. They did their very best for God whether it was cleaning toilets or giving lectures. They were practical mystics who cultivated not only plants but a higher vibration of energetic cooperation in themselves through their attunement to nature.
At Findhorn the Flowers absolutely sing the praises of the Divine. Their joyous faces in radiant colors proclaim the wonder of being alive. Their subtle but powerful voices can be heard shouting the glory of abundant Life. Their beauty beckons us to play and reach for our dreams in the Garden of Life. They awaken gracefully and happily every morning and stretch toward the Light and send their shoots deep down into the warm Earth for food and fertility. They call us to do the same.
The Trees at Findhorn speak to us of ancient wisdom. Their arms wrap around our sorrows and recycle our grief. They bear witness to our journey. They are silent testaments of strength and solidarity. They reach in all directions to comfort, soothe and uplift all of Creation. They take in what we breathe out, recycle it, and return to us what we need to survive. They give us breath, shelter us and guide us. Understanding and acknowledging this relationship builds and strengthens the energy between us.
It is the same everywhere but at Findhorn we notice it more because the spirits of all the elements have been honored and so they are vividly and tangibly present. Their vibrations are stronger because they have been nurtured, respected and heard.
The Universe is not a collection of objects but a communion of Beings. The great Garden of Findhorn reminds us that we can align with Life, have intimate communion with the Creator in every living form on this Planet of God. “Nothing is impossible with God” shout all the Living ones. As conscious co-creators, we begin by surrendering to the Love that is more real than breath itself. We let go, listen, attune to Spirit and trust that Love will guide our way. We plant seeds of God inside and out and grow stronger in this Blessing Field of the Living, Breathing Holy Mother Earth.
I am happy to be back at Unity Church for Creative Living and will share more about “The Story of Findhorn” on Sunday. Last night dancing with our children was my perfect welcome home. I look forward to seeing you this week for Monday night Meditation, Wednesday Night Prayer Class Tune-Up, and our Fall Dance on Saturday. There is so much I have to share with you from Joanna Macy’s divinely inspired “The Work that Reconnects” group beginning on Wednesday October 7th at 7:00pm. I want everyone to increase their capacity to align with spiritual energy through these powerful processes and practices of gratitude, deep listening, honoring our pain, seeing with new eyes, and going forth with peace and passion.
Thank you for all your loving support, hugs and encouragement as I move more freely in my own skin and learn to live fully alive with more trust and hope and joy than ever before. For more information about The Findhorn Community go to www.findhorn.org
